Match Results December 9th, 2012
Today was the last Field Target Match of year 2012 at the DeSoto Gun Club and the Airgunners came out in force. After a dense morning fog burned off, the day was quite Sunny with just a few puffy clouds across a deep blue sky. Temps climbed into the mid 80's and the slightest breeze drifted across the lanes. The course was our typical set-up of 7 lanes; 3 targets per lane for a total of 42 shots. My special thanks go out to Doug A. for his enthusiastic assistance setting out the course.
It was also a special day for a couple of the founding DeSoto Airgunners that had been battling recent illness. They mustered their courage and energies to make it to the range today. Dick O. was sporting a full beard covering his stitches (and he also shot his USFT pretty well too). Gordon H. arrived later and was feeling too weak to shoot but it was great to see him out and about and having fun chatting at the lanes and joining us for lunch when the match concluded.
Also noteworthy, today we were joined by a new shooter Robert N. He came to the Club with the intent to only observe and to learn what a Field Target match was all about. He mentioned his considerable experience with firearms and some casual airgun shooting too. Jim B. very generously offered to share his rifle if Rob wished to join his squad and try shooting. At days end Rob said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and I must say shooting 75% with a borrowed rifle first time out on a Field Target course was a strong performance. I think Rob is hooked. Good Going and Kudos to Rob and specially to Jim !
Dan C. and Donovan T. made the 2.5 hour trek across the State for today’s match. Shooting an Anschutz ZM 2002 Donovan missed only 1 shot the entire day. Donovan is already planning on competing in the 2013 Worlds in Europe. This guy is serious. Till recently he only shot PCP air rifles. Donovan tells me he now practices almost every day with his new HW97 “springer”. And what a piston gun it is. Words can't do it justice. The full custom designed field target stock is a work of art; hydro-dip finished in a simulated carbon fiber pattern of Corvette blue and black. The clear-coat shine is so deep it looks like you could sink your arms up to your elbows into the finish. It's still a work in progress as he plans to top it off with a new 10 – 60 March Scope and other goodies. That will be one Extreme WOW ! I'm looking forward to Donovan shooting that piston powered super rig at some DeSoto Airgunners competition next year.
Speaking of 2013, It's almost official; the 2013 Florida State Match will be hosted at the DeSoto Gun Club on Sunday March 10th, 2013. More details should be available very soon.
A final word of Thanks and Well Wishes. We deeply appreciate the support of the DeSoto Gun Club, its directors and membership. Many thanks also to all the Field Target enthusiasts who often drive long distances to enjoy the competition and the camaraderie our sport can offer. We wish you all Happy Holidays, and a Healthy, Safe New Year ! - Ron Z.
