November 10, 2013 Fun Match
After several months off during our Summer Sabbatical, DeSoto Airgunners held a Fun Match on Sunday November 10th. This shoot had its emphasis on FUN over Competition. The score you shot was just that.... your score, and it would not be posted in any competitive listing. In addition each shooter had the freedom to shoot any target from any position that felt comfortable.
Though this 46 shot outing included 3 “Off-Hand” targets and 2 “Kneeling” targets, these were designated solely as a “suggested ” shooting position. Several veteran shooters who love a challenge shot the course entirely as “suggested”. ( Donovan T. aced all the forced position targets!) Others choose to shoot those lanes from a more physically comfortable (and the easier) seated position. No Problem.... Shooters choice; Today was all for the fun of it !
I'm always delighted whenever a new shooter joins the sport; or for that matter, when a veteran re-connects with field target shooting. Gene C. a long time field target shooter with Rodney Boyce and the old TampaBay Airgunner crew, return to the lanes after a decade hiatus. We joked how shooting was like riding a bicycle, one never forgets how.... and sure enough Gene was knocking 'em down lane after lane with his HW77 and classic Bushnell 6-18. Welcome Back !
A complete newcomer to Field Target, Neil J. from Sarasota brought his recently acquired TX200 and with just a few ranged numbers on his scope he was able to down around 50% of the targets; a fantastic showing for a “newbie”.
The two venerable “Hunter” shooters in our club, Jack R. and Colin P. must have been practicing during our off time. They both shot very well today. Shooting offhand from atop the airport boarding ramp Jack missed only one of the suggested 6 “offhand” shots.
Last time I saw Bill S. he said was selling his USFT / Sightron rig. Happily, he thought better and ended up putting in an excellent performance with that combo. After the match and feeling a little exhausted Bill told me changed his mind; and now he was considering selling his TX ( springer). Hang in there Bill !
Finally, we had two folks from the Tampa area come down just to observe our match. They own Marauder rifles but had never seen a field target event . If they're good to their words and intentions, we should see them taking part in our next match which will be on Sunday December 8th.
As for this writer and shooter.......... you'll just have to guess my score too . No one cleaned the course. I will tell you the fun factor was a 10 out of 10
