Jan. 11 Club Match
2015, A New Year & Some New Targets
Our first match of 2015; DeSoto Airgunners wanted to start with something new at the event. With the support of our host The DeSoto Gun Club, we were able to purchase six new RHINO field targets from Dick Otten (Fieldtargets.com) for the club. [Dick's latest Field Target evolution includes a new sensitivity adjustment in a design that truly isolates any paddle movement from the target's faceplate motion.]
We set out a 52 shot course. Two shots at each of the 26 targets that were spread over 8 lanes. ( Lanes 1 and 5 each had 4 targets, a little unusual but that worked fine). Lane 7 was designated Off Hand Only and could be taken from ground level or from atop the elevated boarding ramp. Among the new targets was a unique side mounted "owl" attached to a tree trunk. What a Hoot ! (sorry). Shooters remarked that the course had a very enjoyable and challenging mix of "kill zone" sizes, target placements and shooting distances. Of the total of 10 participants, six shot Hunter ( 3 piston and 3 precharge rifles). Two shot Open Class pcp, and there were two WFTF shooters; one a piston and one a precharge shooter.
At this time of year we can get some wide temperature swings in Southwest Florida. The day started cloudy in the Low 50's during morning set-up and rose to the mid 80's by the end of the match (around 2:15PM) A manageable wind of 6 mph was punctuated with occasional gusts to near 20MPH as the weak front cleared around noon bringing some brilliant ( and warm) sunshine. Shedding clothing layers was the way to go today.
Among today's 10 shooters was a complete new comer to Field Target. Tim Gross was familiar with airguns but never saw a Field Target match. He came only to observe but was soon hooked. With a shared TX200 and some help from his squad Tim shot a very decent score of 18. Perhaps he'll soon become a regular.
My Hearty Thanks for all those who made the trek to participate; and a Special Thanks to Neil and to Herb for arriving very early and helping with the course set-up. No single match director can make this much fun happen without enthusiastic volunteers.
