Match Results 11/08/15
Our November Club Match brought a total of 8 shooters for the 42 shot competition. The morning started with a little early fog which soon gave way to a beautiful blue sky and warm sunshine by the time “Hot Line” was called. For about half the match there was a fairly consistent cooling breeze. Then almost dead calm followed, making the 90 degree temperature feel even hotter by the end of the match, specially while we gathered up the targets and strings. Thanks to those who helped out.
As the Match Director it felt gratifying to hear a number of shooters praise the course layout; that it featured a good mix of target placements and difficulties providing fun and challenge. The longest shot of the day was on Lane 2, a rabbit with a 1.25” KZ set at ~52 yards. The off-hand lane (7) took it's toll on most shooters though Bill Liebke nailed 5 of the 6 while Donovan Taylor skillfully aced that lane (again).
The physical layout of our course follows a dogleg until lane 1 and lane 7 are essentially at 90 degrees to one another. Our venue also includes trees and several tall berms that can create weird swirling winds. Sometimes an apparently easy target will leave a shooter conversing with himself : “why didn't that target fall for me?”.
Another element of difficulty that (accidentally) got built into the course today was a visibility factor. Lane 3 wouldn't calculate a high Troyer difficulty but the far target blended well into the brown background. There was an orange marker in place to help shooters locate that target. Still, no less than 5 of the 8 shooters scored a full blank (double misses) on the third target. Maybe those swirling winds played a role here.
Happily no one complained that a couple targets had their KZ's partially “veiled” by some thin blades of grass or by a contour in the ground. Shooting from their higher seated position the “Hunters” had a slight advantage. Others shot from their bum-bag and simply blasted through the wispier coverings to score their kill. Yet others saw that target position and condition as a challenge and an opportunity to practice shooting from a kneeling position (to get a clearer sight-line to the target KZ).
All in all it was a terrific match. As a South-Floridian I'm looking forward to Winter. Field Target is a great sport but generally more comfortable in Florida when our local temps can dive down to between 45 and 75 degrees. Winter is also our “dry” season with low humidity and event rain-outs are infrequent.
DeSoto Airgunners next Field Target event will be Sunday December 13th.
ALSO: Remember the upcoming Florida Ultimate Bench Rest shoot Saturday, January 30th at Dade City Rod & Gun Club.
