DeSoto Airgunner Club Match 12/13/15
It might be a stretch to call our December event a “match”. With only two participants it looked more like a serious practice secession. My Sincere Thanks to Jack Rainey for all his help with the course set-up and knock-down today.
The 42 shot seven lane Field Target course was set out early Sunday morning when the temps were a relatively cool 65 degrees. By official sight-in time the Sun got to work, gradually bringing the afternoon to a warm 80 degrees by 1:00PM.
Twenty minutes past the time for the Shooters Meeting I was feeling a little disappointed with all the no-shows this weekend. Jack turned that mood around by positively announcing “this is a perfect day to shoot”. He added some sage advice: “you don't improve if you don't practice.” On to the lanes we went!
The wind speeds rapidly increased from an average of 8 mph to 18 mph as we moved through the course. Occasional higher gusts blew in for added interest, fun and challenge. Successfully nailing those longer range targets became all the more gratifying. The one big drawback today was the fire-ants. The shooting area on several lanes was so infested we had to pass on those. Looks like a trip to the Home Depot for some killer before our next event.
Today's squadding was simple; Jack shot “Hunter” with his AA200 and Ron shot “Open” division with his LG100. We had plenty opportunity to talk. Our conversations included good doses about rifles, pellets, scopes, rules and the like. And we also learned some of each others individual backgrounds, sharing some amusing anecdotes about past careers and experiences.
One, two or twenty players, Field Target (and most sport target shooting ) is really a contest with your own personal skill level. Today's course at the DeSoto Airgunners venue provided an opportunity with conditions to challenge any individual. In the end it really went beyond serious practice, we had a terrific Field Target Match. As for the scores; Jack and Ron each came in First Place in their respective divisions.
