Saint Valentine's Day Club Match
Today's shoot coincided with St. Valentine's Day and was nothing short of a lovely day for the nine Field Target competitors who braved a cold start to the morning. And to the spouses, companions, significant others, lovers and friends, a word of thanks for your tolerance and understanding while your valentine may have been away shooting this morning.
With a fresh coat of paint on all the targets they sparkled in the Sunshine yet could be well hidden in the contrasting deep shadows of this brilliant clear day. I only wish I had painted the rabbit on lane 3 a Valentine's red ( or a shocking pink) for contrast. That brown painted target virtually disappeared against the dirt mound even though it was less than 25 yards away.
If you check the almanac for Arcadia Florida weather during the competition times you'll see a most unusual pattern of winds rapidly shifting direction. Gentle but competing weather fronts mixed, stalled to a calm, then shifted, bringing 15 MPH gusts from several directions throughout the match. This unusual pattern made for some real shooting challenges. As the Match Director and long time enthusiast I personally felt today brought some of the more enjoyable conditions we've experienced in quite a while. The cool temps, fresh wind gusts, low humidity, brilliant sunshine and cloudless sky made for a great shooting competition. ( If only I could bottle that up and save it for a Summertime afternoon in Southwest Florida) .
Another plus to the day: a new shooter: Gary Palinkas, shot a very respectable 24 “kills”. We hope he becomes a regular too. Thanks to all who made the trek from Tampa and from Ft Lauderdale as well. It was also encouraging to see Paul Stakum shoot with us this week. Paul organized the terrific Florida Ultimate Bench Rest match held two weeks ago at the Dade City Rod & Gun Club. For those that didn't make that fun event, sadly, Paul didn't either. A bad case of food poisoning from a restaurant located in Wesley Chapel FL. literally left Paul collapsed at the Dade City Gun Club. We're glad that he and his wife are doing much better.
As for the DeSoto Airgunners Air Rifle Bench Rest shooting, I plan to make a proposal to our Board that the Airgunners get formal authorization to hold some BR activities when our Field Target season closes for Summertime. I'll keep you posted on that effort.

It might be a stretch to call our December event a “match”. With only two participants it looked more like a serious practice secession. My Sincere Thanks to Jack Rainey for all his help with the course set-up and knock-down today.
The 42 shot seven lane Field Target course was set out early Sunday morning when the temps were a relatively cool 65 degrees. By official sight-in time the Sun got to work, gradually bringing the temps to a warm 80 degrees by 1:00PM.
Twenty minutes past the time for the Shooters Meeting I was feeling a little disappointed with all the no-shows this weekend. Jack turned that mood around by positively announcing “this is a perfect day to shoot”. He added some sage advice: “you don't improve if you don't practice.” On to the lanes we went!
The wind speeds rapidly increased from an average of 8 mph to 18 mph as we moved through the lanes. Occasional higher gusts blew in for added interest, fun and challenge. Successfully nailing those longer range targets became all the more gratifying.
Squadding was simple; Jack shot “Hunter” with his AA200 and Ron shot “Open” division with his LG100. We had plenty opportunity to talk. Our conversations included good doses about rifles, pellets, scopes, rules and the like. And we also learned some of each others individual backgrounds, sharing some amusing anecdotes about past careers and experiences.
One, two or twenty players, Field Target (and most sport target shooting ) is really a contest with your own skill level. Today's lanes at the DeSoto Airgunners venue provided a fun course with conditions to challenge any skill level. In the end it really went beyond practice, we had a terrific match. As for the scores; Jack and Ron each came in First Place in their respective divisions.
