Daylight Savings Match
Let me start my review by proposing a “radical” idea : Daylight Savings Time be abandoned. Loosing an hour sleep for some arbitrary arcane notion is ridiculous and tough when you need to make a very early start on that Sunday morning.
Our hosting venue has instituted new Range Rules that restrict Field Target Course set-up activities to early Sunday mornings over the option for a late Saturday afternoon setup. So, with bleary eyes, several airgunners showed early Sunday to begin the set-up at 7:45 AM (biologically speaking; it was 6:45AM range time). It had to be dark as night when some of the competitors drove from the Ft. Lauderdale and from the Tampa areas. Special thanks to all who arrived early to assist with the set-up and thanks to everyone who participated in the match.
With many hands working and cool temps in the 60's we were able to set-up and begin the shoot on-time. The morning started calm, then stronger breezes picked up as the Sun tried to shine through broken clouds. Otherwise, excellent conditions prevailed throughout the event. Temps were held in check (under 80 degrees ) by a partly cloudy sky and the few drops of rain that fell from a passing dark cloud were hardly noticed.
Our 42 shot Daylight Savings event brought out 7 ( full course) shooters and one observer (Ian) from Canada. Ian didn't have much time to spend with us, and his air rifle / scope set-up was barely adequate for plinking tin cans at 20 yards, not for threading 1 inch targets at 30 yards. He was a good sport, learned something about shooting Field Target and took an early DNF.
Donovan won Top Gun honors again, ( this time saved only by his great off-hand skills). The course had a good spread of difficulties, changing conditions and the scores were fairly tight.
DeSoto Airgunners has at least one more FT shoot scheduled (for April) before our “Summer Sabbatical” begins. Jack & Colin will be marshaling the April FT event. If you're shooting, please arrive early to assist.
As Florida temps bounce towards 90 degrees with similar humidity numbers, DeSoto Airgunners will be turning our attention to Bench Rest shooting. Our hosting facility ( DeSoto Gun Club ) has invested in some top notch concrete bench rest stations that are protected and covered from the elements. I'm hoping to have 25 / 50 meter BR shoots at those facilities (Starting in May?). I've received several emails with strong interest from other BR shooters around the State. Watch the website "Match Schedule" page and your email for upcoming events and changes.
