Bench Rest - 5/8/2016
Our first Air Rifle Bench Rest shoot of 2016 was a soaring success. Primarily Field Target enthusiasts, DeSoto Airgunners had more than a few things to learn and to prepare for serious Air Rifle Bench Rest shooting. Huge thanks have to go out to Colin Pilkington and to Jack Rainey. They really are the catalysts who made it happen for us. From their meeting with our hosting club's directors, to spending the efforts assembling custom target stands and setting secure mounting fixtures, Colin and Jack invested many hours. They also procured a good supply of those official targets and the scoring plugs. Special Thanks also go to DeSoto Gun Club President Terry M. to Range Safety Officer Ron H. and to the Board of Directors of the DeSoto Gun Club for support with scheduling and facility use.
Ken Hicks deserves a shout-out for his commitment to Bench Rest shooting as he drove from the western Florida panhandle, (some 4.5 hours each way !) to compete and show his support for our Bench Rest event. Ken also got the chance to test his new Ataman rifle out to 100 yards. Pretty Impressive. A couple experienced BR shooters ( Paul Stakun and Bill Liebke) made the trek from the Dade City Rifle Club (north of Tampa), and another from the Melbourne area. DeSoto Airgunners wish to thank all who showed today from near and far, even the couple who came only to observe.
Bill Beaman, who shot Field Target in the 1980's brought a classic Theoben rifle but unfortunately didn't have an air-fill adapter for it. Undaunted, he broke out a Gamo spring gun and tried his luck for a while. I suspect Bill will be returning next time with all the accessories for a much more satisfying day.
A couple shooters used their 12 foot pound “ Field Target” rifles and scored very well against some pretty specialized Bench Rest gear pushing near 35 ft. pounds energy. Speaking of hardware; one shooter ( Frank Mendola ) not only had a top notch rifle, scope and bench rest setup; he brought along a portable digital Doppler radar ( I'm not kidding) to measure each pellet's performance as it flew towards the target. Frank is obviously intense about his Bench Rest shooting (some may say borderline bonkers?) but his target scores and overall performance certainly proved to be the days best. I hope Frank comes to shoot some Field Target when we restart those matches. (Sorry, I don't think Doppler aids are allowed in that competition.)
Since DeSoto Gun Club is not (yet) a USARB sanctioned venue, we had flexibility to take some minor “liberties.” For example, for Equipment Classifications we broke the group into 3 major categories: SIMPLE, those using fixed, non-articulating single or 2 piece rests (like ordinary sandbags). Next group: ARTICULATED, utilized the more precise ( 2 piece) mechanically articulating adjustable rifle rests. The third group we termed EXOTIC incorporated the use very specialized articulating one piece rifle rests. Otherwise all scoring was verified per USARB guidelines. Aggregate scores and X's are posted below with some equipment info.
