Bench Rest 7-10-16
Our June Match was a rain-out so the Air Rifle BR enthusiasts were eager to see the July 10th match go off without a hitch. We had a solid turn-out of 10 shooters, and a couple observers came by. Hopefully they will be returning one of these months with their new air rifle rigs, ready to have some safe fun at the DeSoto Gun Club's excellent facilities. Compared to conditions earlier in the week (when humidity and temps made it feel like 114 degrees), weather conditions today were splendid for Southern Florida. While the "feel like" temps were heading into the triple digits, we had some overcast, and occasional refreshing breezes blow as we completed our single relay 3-card event before noon. The covered BR range contains (only) 8 concrete shooting benches. These are among the best I've seen or used. Earthquake proof. The adjacent range has two shallow and long wooden benches from which Jack R. and Ron Z. shot. This allowed us to accommodate all 10 shooters within a single relay and complete the match before the increasing afternoon heat and seasonal thunderstorms arrived.
A Special Shout-Out goes to Paul S. and Bill L. who marshaled the firing line and sincere THANKS for also scoring the targets. And to Jack R. for setting out the course early Sunday morning.
Some of the more veteran shooters are pushing for DeSoto Gun Club to become a sanctioned USARB venue . That will be coming. For now we'll continue taking some minor “liberties” along our learning curve. For example: Equipment Classifications. We break the group into 3 major categories: SIMPLE, those using fixed, non-articulating single ( front) or 2 piece rests (like ordinary sandbags). Next group: ARTICULATED, utilize the more precise ( 2 piece) mechanically articulating adjustable rifle rests. The third group we term EXOTIC incorporate the use of specialized articulating one piece whole-rifle rests.
Primarily a Field Target shooter, I understand the AAFTA classifications and divisions much better than those of the USARB Bench Rest community. ( Please excuse any errors as I take a stab at the Classifications).
Frank M. who sports some rather exotic BR equipment had his Thomas Rifle's regulator fail just before the match began. Frank also uses a pressure pre-regulator on his CF bulk fill air tank. That pre-reg saved his day. However, in order to shoot, Frank had to keep his rifle tethered to his external air tank. ( This is another "liberty" not afforded within USARB guidelines ). Despite his travail Frank finished with a score of 745 points, and an impressive 38 X's ! Paul Stakun was right on his heels with an excellent total score of 741 points with 25 X's. Also noteworthy, the lone piston springer shooter ( Lindsey M.) shot a borrowed sub 12 ft.lb TX200. It was obvious by smiles and banter over lunch at the local Mexican joint he also had a very enjoyable day on the range. I'm not sure why, ( or if USARB would frown), but Doug A. shot both his Hammerli and his Air Arms S200 rifles during the match today.
This brings me to a couple observations. Safe Fun and Sportsmanship are and will always be our priorities. One of the aspects of shooting sports is the fact you're really competing with yourself. There will always be someone with "better", more exotic and expensive equipment; with years more experience and practice. Most know and respect some competitors that just possess extraordinary shooting skill. Also; you have to admire the clever innovations and resourcefulness which many shooters bring to the sport. Today Bill F. used an adjustable height front rest made from an automobile scissor jack.
When listing the scores I took note that EVERY shooter performed BETTER than their previous BR outing at DeSoto so Congratulations to All.
All scoring was verified per USARB guidelines. Aggregate scores and X's are posted below with some equipment info.
