Bench Rest 9/11/16
9/11/2016 DeSoto Airgunners Air Rifle Bench Rest Competition
We shall always remember 9/11 ( 2001) as a tragic day in American history. Happily, this 9/11 ( 2016) was a memorable day (at least currently in my mind ) as a great time spent with my fellow air rifle enthusiasts, shooting a 3-card (75 shot) 25 meter Bench Rest competition. We had a turnout of 11 shooters with a broad range of talent and experience. Since our “official” BR range (the one with those fantastic concrete benches) filled quickly, we also used the neighboring range at our facility for the spill-over.
I was delighted to see new faces today. We had a couple shooters who never shot formalized BR before, a woman shooter ( Cindy A.) completely new to airgunning, and ( Jeff K.) a hunter and airgun plinker who thought he would try his hand. We also had the usual suspects with varying degrees of experience, skill (and luck).
A Special Shout-Out to Jack R. one of our intrepid BR leaders. Jack had to pass on shooting this week as he recently underwent surgery. Undaunted, Jack still came out today and commanded the match in a precise and safe manner. Many Thanks Jack for all your efforts as today's Match Director and Marshall. We look forward to seeing you behind the trigger very soon !!!
Today's match had shooters driving as far as 288 miles ( each way !) to participate. I bet if we combined and stretched the mileages all the shooters traveled today we would reach between NYC and Chicago. This is an amazing fact since today's event was just a “Club Match”; We offered no money no prizes, no trophy or plaques, just the bragging rights for a tournament well shot.
As providence would have it, our Top Scoring “winning” participant also happened to be the person who drove the furthest distance. Our Top Gun was Ken Hicks from Yulee FL (about a slingshot distance away from Florida's northeast border with Georgia). Ken brought his new RAW BM 500 rifle and shot an amazing 3 target card set that included 37 X's. Just a phenomenal performance. He managed to squeak past Frank Mandola (a consistently great BR shooter) by 1 point. Awesome. There couldn't have been a more exciting finish to the day's competition as each of those competitor's targets was reviewed twice and then over again before the results were declared “official”.
Our gun club grounds recently experienced some severe flooding, a couple major roads were washed to sinkholes. The area we use to shoot “Field Target” events was still underwater so it looks like October's FT match will be delayed a month. Good News: We'll be hosting another Bench Rest shoot in October. Keep your barrels clean for that one.
