2018 Closeout Match
reported by Ron Z. aka Evil Match Director
Being the last airgun event of calendar year 2018 we hoped to see a good turn-out. To accommodate as many shooters as possible DeSoto Airgunners scheduled both Bench Rest and Field Target competitions to be held simultaneously. 21 shooters expressed high confidence they would attend. (Split almost 50/50 between FT and BR ). As Sunday approached the forecast went from mildly threatening to seriously intimidating; from scattered rain showers to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds.
Several airgun regulars that have a significant drive to the venue opted to remain home. A couple enthusiasts made the hundred mile trek from Tampa and from the Plant City areas of Florida. A solid turn-out by local Airgunners brought the total to 13 participants.
Many hands arrived early to set the Field Target and Benchrest Courses. There was increasing motivation to get set and start early today. Sky's were darkening and the wind was beginning to shift. A few joked and made predictions about when the heavy showers would arrive as they studied the weather radar on their smartphones.
Field Target Match:
Kudos to the five FT participants. In addition to the challenges of a Standing and a Kneeling lane, today's 40 shot FT match included an interesting obstacle on Lane 4 . A contractor parked his excavator on that lane so we had to shoot under the bucket-arm to hit the targets. Something a little unexpected.
Today's shooters were determined to complete the 7 lane 40 shot course in-spite of the weather. There were short downpours punctuating a mild but steady rain around 10:30 and a few wind gusts pushed over 25 mph as the front quickly moved through. Even with foul-weather-gear it was soggy, and not everyone brought proper rainwear for these conditions.
Gary P. was today's Top Gun in the Field Target competition with a high score of 33. A strong rivalry is brewing between Gary and Dennis D. who finished only 1 point behind in this month's Field Target event.
Benchrest:
Seven shooters took to the benches for what was scheduled to be a 3-card USARB style match, marshaled by your scribe and match director Ron Z. While our benches have overhead cover and offer some protection from the elements, not so the paper targets or the 25meter path the pellets had to fly. Wind and rain always increase the difficulty.
I was thrilled to see five new shooters press on through the match. Some were very new to airgun sports or they had brought untested guns and scopes expecting to get sighted-in today. No surprise, not everyone completed the full 75 shot, 3-card relay. All who shot on the BR range today benefited from trigger time and experience shooting in challenging conditions.
Today's BR and FT shoots concluded within about half hour of each. The rain clouds began to thin as we quickly put our targets and toys away. By 11:30 we were off to our favorite Mexican restaurant, but not before I changed into some dryer clothes.
