2019 Happy New Year Field Target Match
With a turn-out of 16 shooters DeSoto Airgunners kicked off the 2019 Airgunning Season with a strong start. Weather was near perfect, a little cool in the early AM and quickly warming to shirt sleeve conditions by noon with brilliant Sun and few clouds. Winds started calm with a slight breeze building to 12mph by mid match adding to the challenge.
Several volunteers arrived early to set the sight-in range and paint the Field Targets for today's event. It's great to see such enthusiasm. With many hands helping we set out an 8 lane 46 shot course that included an optional target on lane 5. Lane 7 was designated Off-Hand Only for which Gary P. provided a convenient sturdy pellet stand / rifle rest. Lane 5 ( a kneeling lane) was a little different today. In addition to the 3 ground placed targets, the kneeler “bonus” One-Time-One-Shot target set on a tree. This was not an easy lane; of the 16 shooters only three hit the bonus target. Of those three, Dennis D. was the only competitor to both clean this lane and hit the bonus target today. Well Done Dennis.
Billed as a Club Match, we made the use of lane timers a shooter option. Normally AAFTA rules permit a minute per shot and a minute for set-up, and that would translate to 7 minutes total on a normal 3-target (6 shot lane). Our more experienced competitors used the timers for added challenge while a couple new-bees understandably took a little longer than that time allotment to complete shooting on some lanes.
Among the day's participants we had a few new(er) shooters with limited Field Target experience so we tried to squad them with helpful seasoned competitors. It was great to see Dick Otten on the lanes again and to learn his target making business is still going steady. For a couple shooters their physical limitations made the forced position shots painful if not impossible but that didn't diminish their exuberance. It was all Good Fun.
The day's TopGun honors went to Donovan T. with an overall high score of 41 shooting his EV2 in WFTF. He was followed closely by Gary P. with a score of 40 shooting in the Open Division. Lindsey M. took 1st place Piston (Hunter). Paul S. and Brad K. tied for PCP Hunter each with a score of 30 kills. ( No tie breaker today)
Judging by the smiles and comments, everyone had a fun time. There was lots of talk about shooting technique, about missed shots, equipment upgrades and potential travel to national meets in 2019. This conversation carried into lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant. Tacos after Targets. We'll have to do it again next month.
