Benchrest 8-14-22
Benchrest Club Match 8-14-22
Today's installment of the Summer Swelter Benchrest Series had some exciting results. Three shooters: Scott, Dennis and Chip ostensibly tied, a dead-heat at 740 Total Points Scored - and that's just for starters.
Range conditions were favorable with only mild wind. It was South-Florida Hot with tolerable humidity. A few shooters brought miniature fans for added comfort at their bench. Our 25 Meter Air rifle Benchrest Event was guided by USARB Regulations with each competitor shooting a 3-Card Relay for a total of 75 scored target "bulls". Our 13 shooters were accommodated in 2 relays.
Arriving early to help with the set-up, I was greeted by smiles and the sight of all the target stands set in place for the event. Thanks to you very early risers and all volunteers.
As more competitors signed in for the shoot some brought various windicators and telltales. I could sense competitive anticipation. Of the 8 shooters in the First Relay there were 5 Thomas air rifles on the line. After missing a couple BR Matches Chip and Dennis returned to compete this month. I suspect neither had been far away from serious practice. Scott got off to a great start, matching Dennis' score of 249 ( of 250 possible) points on their first Target Cards. By the end of the third target card Scott, Chip and Dennis were in a 3-way tie, each scoring 740 Total Points.
Rules Consultation
Under USARB Rule C.9 Ties: 'one goes to the number of "X"s scored to break the tie'. [That dropped Scott (with 21 X's) to Third Place leaving Dennis and Chip still tied with 740 points and 27 X's each.] The Rule book paragraph C.9a goes on to say the 'First Miss on X's breaks the tie'. (That's more detail then I want to know for a casual Club match) I also think Chip and Dennis were happy with ending in a tie. It will surely add more drama to their next BR meeting.
USARB Technical Note: Most of todays shooters including Dennis and Chip compete in Heavy Varmint Class. Scott's gear put him in the Unlimited Class primarily due to an Electronic Trigger, Also Wayne's use of a one-piece rest put him in Unlimited Class.
Linda was our " X Prize " winner with 29 bulls. She has also been outstanding as leader of the Scoring Team. While reviewing the cards and results Linda astutely pointed to a USARB Scoring Rule regarding multiple shots on a target box.
8d Multiple shots on Targets: Should multiple shots appear in a scoring box, only the lowest score will be counted and will be penalized by subtracting 1 point as a penalty.
It's a scoring nuance I was not aware of. It correctly added 3 points to Steve's final score; enough to move him up one position.
Originally scored as -10 points (or zero), the proper score is -7 points ( or +3)
It's always good to see fresh interest in airgun sports. Today's gathering included a new (to airgunning) shooter Bob C . who did well with borrowed gear. Also, Carl P. an experienced powder burner, rode his Harley across the state to observe, absorb, and possibly join in some future airgun event.
Long time Club Members and semi-retired airgun enthusiasts Colin & Jack stopped by the match Sunday to say Hi and see how the benchrest activity has grown. ( Jack & Colin built the airgunners BR Target Stands we still use today). Thanks Guys ! 'Was good to see you again.
Looking at benchrest scores over the past seasons Dennis noted how our scores have steadily improved. Breaking through scores of 600, then 650 was a challenge. At today's match no shooter scored under 700 points. - And a few DeSoto Airgunners have shown they can compete at a very high level. Well Done One And All !
Our next scheduled match is another Benchrest Event. Some want it to be a 50 yard event. Stay Tuned.
