Match Results
Sunday 2/9/14
While much of the country is in Winter's cold grip with snow showers, ice storms and consequences like power outages and snarled traffic we in Florida had a glorious day for our first match of the 2014 Field Target season at the Desoto Airgunners Club.
Eleven field target shooters showed today. In addition to the usual suspects from the Tampa Bay and the Fort Lauderdale areas we had the pleasure of seeing a couple “new” shooters join in the fun today. They may have been "snowbirds" but they arrived well equipped with serious FT rigs ( A Daystate Mk4 and a Rapid TM1000). William L. and Paul S. had obviously been through some field target lanes before and scored very well in the Hunter Division.
Today’s 42 shot ( 21 target) 7 lane course included the unique elevated airplane boarding ramp platform. Shooting off hand from this ramp really test the competitors mettle. ( However, being a friendly club match we accepted any other options to shoot that lane including seated at ground level or from a kneeling position without incurring a scoring “penalty”. (The day's “grand prize” after all was a bag of M&Ms so no big issues with scores)
Most shooters that were able to opted for the challenge of the elevated position and a few scored 50% on that lane. Frankly, I never expected many good off-handed shot scores considering the target difficulty from that platform position. Then came Donovan T., all trussed in his leather shooting jacket with a will of iron in his eyes. He fought for every point and confidently nailed 6 of his 6 standing shots ! I nearly fell over just watching him in action.
Next shooter in our squad was Emilio M., a relative newcomer to our venue and he managed a very respectable 4 off handed kills from the platform. As I began climbing up the steps to the top of the ramp my emotions and heart were racing. Had the targets been positioned easier than I thought or was I squaded with a pair of ringers? Slowly, with determination and resolve, controlled breath and positive thoughts I squeezed off my shots making 5 of the 6 kills. I practically floated down those ramp stairs with joy having experienced how competition with your “betters” can often hone your skills and pull your own capabilities forward. (Next time I'll get 'em all.) What a great lane !
To add to the fun, confusion and to add a little stress, a couple targets on other lanes were set up closer than 10 yards. (between 7 to 8 yards). The rangefinding experience with my 50X Nikko was like aiming through wax paper. Holding a little high off the fuzzy white spot (which was the kill zone) worked; (So too would moving a couple yards backwards but fuzzy focus was more fun).
I think all the shooters who made the trek to today’s 2014 season opener had a terrific experience. The comfortably cool overcast morning slowly gave way to puffy clouds filtering a blue sky and Sun with temperatures in the mid 70's by the end of the match. Everyone said they would like to return next month........... Hope to see you all March 9th ! I promise all targets will be at least 10 yards distance.
