Field Target Season Opener 1/8/17
Today was the official start of the 2017 Field Target season at DeSoto Gun Club. For this Season Opener we set out a 42 shot, 7 lane course and we kept the Troyer Difficulty factor reasonable because of the high winds and (relatively) cold temps for our area. A special shout out to Jack and Colin for their early arrival and assistance setting out today's course. Thanks to all who helped put our toys away too.
The match conditions were very challenging. In addition to the unusual chill, there were near steady winds of 12 to 18 MPH from the North and North-East. An occasional lull then sudden gust added to the difficulty and to the fun of the event. Even with a bright Sun and clear blue sky, temps barely managed to reach 50 by the end of the match. Dressing in layers was the way to go. This was one occasion when I thought a heavy shooting coat would have been a welcome accessory in Southwest Florida.
Emilio and Donovan ( Ft Lauderdale ) shot WFTF division, Colin and Jack ( Lake Placid) shot standard Hunter Division regulations. Bill drove down from the Tampa area and shot a “free-style” (unlimited ) Open Hunter game while Ron (match director and scribe) shot the classical Open Field Target style.
At the conclusion of the match we talked about the day's conditions and our experiences. No doubt everyone enjoyed themselves. It was a fun mix of target difficulties specially when punctuated by the day's wind factor.
Lane two Target Three was the star of the day. Set out at ~47 yards, a “crab” target (with a 1.5” KZ ) was situated next to a large Oak tree, and bordered by two berms; the berms meeting at right angles. Those swirling, rolling, twisting winds in the area had to be chaotic. Not a single competitor was able to down that target; Not one kill on the crab! (At least the paddle won't need repainting. The face-plate ..... that's another story.)

Lane two Target Three was the star of the day. Set out at ~46 yards, a “crab” target (with a 1.5” KZ ) was situated next to a large Oak tree, and bordered by two berms, the berms meeting at right angles. Swirling, rolling, twisting winds around that area had to have been chaotic; Not a single competitor was able to down that target; not one kill on that crab!
