Summer comes early to Southwest Florida. Deep blue sky, bright sun, and temps that steadily climbed toward 90 degrees set a relaxed tone for the DeSoto Airgunners Inaugural Match. (OK it is Florida and a little humidity crept in on the occasional breeze).
A total of 14 shooters participated including 2 Juniors, 1 Lady, and 1 First Timer. Shooters came from as far away as Tampa, Naples, and the Fort Lauderdale area for this first of three matches scheduled for 2006.
The overall difficulty (Troyer Factor) was a tad under 30, but the course design was such to foil a "cleaned course". The 42 shot match had something to challenge every level of competitor : Close-in small kill-zone targets and a not so close-in Owl with a 3/4" KZ perched up in a tree at 35 yards! Lane one was a little different in that you took 3 shots at each of 2 offhand targets. At 19 yards a 1 3/4" Wolf, and at a daunting 49 yards the offhander Rabbit. The match featured a distinctive mix of unique whimsical cartoon and other lifelike targets including a 6 foot Alligator !
The match was billed as a no-prize fun only event as the modest $3.00 shooting fee goes to the hosting range. A few DeSoto Airgunner Tee shirts were handed out at the end of the day to some of the "high achievers".
With big scopes and some unorthodox looking air rifles, the DeSoto Airgunners Inaugural Field Target Match attracted more than a few curious onlookers at the gun range that day. Perhaps some of those powder, shotgun, and cowboy pistol shooters will try our air rifle sport one day.
Special Thanks to Dick Otten for his targets, his dedication, and his enormous efforts. It simply would not have happened without him.
