FT - 1/8/23
Match Results January 8, 2023
Our first match of the 2023 Season brought a strong turnout of 14 shooters. Conditions were near perfect for this Field Target Match. Starting out jacket-cool during early morning course set-up, the Florida Sun warmed us to shirt-sleeves by the conclusion of today's event. Wearing and peeling off light layers was the way to dress. Deep blue sky added to this "chamber of commerce day". Light puffs of 4 to 8 MPH felt refreshing and added a little more interest to those longer distance shots.
Today's 48 shot course was spread over 8 lanes. Lane 4 was designated "kneeling" position and Lane 6 was our "Offhand" lane today. No one aced both forced position lanes; in fact no one cleaned either forced position lane today. After dropping 9 shots on just those two lanes your intrepid match director and web-scribe Ron Z summed it this way: "Much more practice is clearly indicated".
Shout-Outs: To Scott for donating some new spray paints, and for painting all the targets before AND after today's match. To Chip for the mechanical refurb of a couple targets and for generating the informative Troyer Graphic shown below the Scores & Equipment Matrix. To Dennis for verifying KZ sizes, target distances, Troyer Modifications and crunching the numbers. Also reminding DeSoto Gun Club Members they are required attend an official 2023 DGC Range Safety Orientation. A group of airgun shooting DeSoto Gun Club Members are planning to attend the 2023 RSO Saturday March 18. More detail may be found HERE.
NOTE: Even if you are not a badge-card carrying DeSoto Gun Club Member, you are invited. Safety is everyone's responsibility.
A New Shooter:
Ron G . came to the Airgun Field Target game from competitive archery. He is President of the Lekatchka Archers Club, (Nokomis FL) located in Knights Trail Park. Some archery disciplines like 3D Competition closely resemble our Field Target game. A number of DeSoto Airgunners were, (and some remain) active with both their airguns and their bows. Ron G. had a good start today, scoring a respectable 31 points on his first outing with us.
A New Match Winner:
At the conclusion of Sunday's Field Target shoot some relatively new participants were on the virtual podium. Doug Cunningham, a Field Target shooter from Ohio (and now a Florida SnowBird,) won today's TOP GUN recognition with a high score of 44 points.
A New Club & Venue:
The day before this event a few DeSoto Airgunners drove many miles to participate in the Inaugural Field Target Match at the new Pensacola Airgun Club ( PAC ) . We wish Bill Corder fun and success building your club. They have a beautifully wooded venue located within the Santa Rosa Shooting Center. It is always great to see airgunning sports expanding specially Field Target in a new venue. Check them out HERE .
A New Shooting Date ? - Maybe.
Generally speaking, the 5th Sunday of the month (of which there are 4 or 5 in a calendar year) are unscheduled dates at the range. I approached a couple DeSoto Gun Club Officers with the prospect of the Airgunners holding 5th Sunday Matches. It might be Air Pistol Silhouette, Field Target (rifle or pistol) or possibly Benchrest competition. We have flexibility. (I was informed the 100 yard Bench Range may sometimes be used by high-power rifle (AR15) shooters on a 5th Sunday.) I hope to formalize some 5th Sunday airgun activities with the Board of Directors in the near future. In 2023 the 5th Sunday dates are: 4/30 7/30 10/29 and 12/31. What do you think ?.
