FT-2-9-25
While a good part of the country remained in Winter's chill, Southwest Floridians enjoyed this Super Bowl Sunday afternoon with temps in the mid 80's, a bright blue sky and occasional soft puffs of wind; conditions near ideal for a little suntan and a fun day on the field target lanes.
The day's match included an appearance by a rare alligator. Resting about 35 yards distance on lane 2 was our vintage life size alligator target. This 5 foot long gator target was originally fashioned for an AAFTA Nationals FT event hosted by Brad Troyer and Rodney Boyce in Melbourne FL (1998?) It's a rare piece of field target history (maybe destined for some future AAFTA Museum).
Lurking on the Lanes - Our lifesize vintage gator target made a rare appearance today
Staying historic: Today being Super Bowl Sunday reminded me of a long running and now bygone field target event - The Florida SuperBowl 100. This classic event was a two day field target competition hosted by Don V. and Cliff S. The 100 shot match was played at two distinct venues during Super Bowl weekend: 50 shots on Saturday at the Pelletcan venue in Dade City, and 50 shots on Sunday at the Tampa Bay Airgunners venue. Great barbecue and camaraderie brought field target enthusiasts from around the country to this event for more than a decade.
Doug Miller travelled from California and took home the 2008 SuperBowl TOP GUN Award.
Today's DeSoto Airgunners club match brought in 10 competitors. The 8 lane 48 shot course included designated kneeling and offhand lanes. Shooting in the Open Division Dennis earned Top Gun recognition with a score of 47 hits. He was our only shooter to clean both forced position lanes. Gary was today's lone WFTF shooter scoring 42 hits and John led the Hunters with 41.
Some targets were set in deep shadow so using the highest magnification setting (50X) to rangefind was almost useless. Other challenges came from a few targets with small (3/8 and 1/4 inch) hit zones intentionally placed at a high difficulty Troyer distance. All in all it was a very satisfying mix with challenges to evoke big fun and a little frustration for all skill and experience levels.
The match ran smoothly with no cold lines or target malfunctions. Shout-outs to Scott who arrived at dawn to paint and prepare the targets; to Dennis and Gary who set out the challenging 8 lane 48 shot course and to all the many hands that made light work of today’s range housekeeping -Thanks!
