GSFT 3-9-25
2025 Golf Scored Field Target Match
With temps in the low 80's, light wind and bright clear sky it was a perfect day for a golf outing or a field target shoot. DeSoto Airgunners combines the fun and frustrations of both sports in our Golf Scored Field Target Event. (GSFT) Basiclly, think of each target on a lane as a golf hole, each shot essentially a golf stroke. Missed shots add strokes, fewest number of strokes wins the match.
AND - there's a bit more.
Our GSFT game has been evolving since March 2007 when Dick Otten first suggested we try an alternative to traditional Field Target. The current GSFT now includes risk / reward options and other fun features that can amplify the value of a single shot and could quickly change a competitors score.
2025 GSFT - Game Play Review:
Like in regular Field Target competitors are required to take two shots at each target. Miss a target twice and you'll score a "3 Stroke Mulligan" Hit it twice you'll immediately have options to consider. You could take a very respectable 1 Stroke score and move on to the next target OR you may risk a third shot on that target to improve (lower) your score. (remember low score wins)
A successful HIT on your option shot will earn you a score of zero strokes for that particular target. Excellent! However, should you miss the option shot your score balloons to 3 strokes for that target. Bummer.

A hit, a miss, even a strategic decline of an available option shot can greatly effect final scores.
The Stroke Reducer -
A multi-faceplate bonus target (aka "Stroke Reducer") was added to the GSFT game in 2021. Here, a single excellent shot could remove 1, 2 or as many as 3 strokes from your final score. Each player takes one shot at the three-faceplate bonus target selecting the difficulty and the corresponding number of stroke deductions awarded for a successful hit.
Hitting the smallest target zone (center target) results in all 3 face-plates falling and a corresponding 3 stroke reduction from your total score.
Hitting the mid size zone (rabbit target) flattens 2 face-plates (rabbit and owl) and results in a 2 stroke score reduction. The owl is a single face-plate drop and earns a one stroke deduction. A miss on the Stroke Reducer Target is not counted, you simply do not get a reduction.
Today's GSFT course was set out on 8 lanes, three targets per lane with the Stroke Reducer placed off to the side on lane 8 as a special 4th target. Lane 5 and lane 7 were designated the kneeling and standing position lanes. Only three shooters bagged all the kneelers and no one cleaned the standing lane today.
We had a turnout of 14 shooters including one airgunning newbie Vinnie L, who at the end of the match declared he was "hooked on the Field Target game".
TOP GUN Honor was earned by Dennis D. Shooting in Open Division, Dennis completed the match with a phenomenal low score of 1 (yes ONE) stroke. His scorecard was perfect until a couple misses on the standing lane. Those cost him +4 strokes. A three faceplate drop on the Stroke Reducer eliminated 3 of those 4 strokes leaving Dennis with the winning low score of a single stroke. A Super Effort!
Bob C was the only other competitor to score in single digits. Shooting in Hunter Division Bob finished the match with a final score of only 8 strokes. Very Well Done!
Today's course included a challenging mix of target difficulties including a not-so-easy off-hand lane. There were enough (apparently) "easy" targets that even the more conservative shooters were tempted to take the amplified risk / reward of an option shot. During the match one could occasionally hear spontaneous celebrations, or muffled groans rising from a lane as scores would quickly change with the hit or the miss of a single shot.
Golf Scored Field Target is a fun change of pace to our regular field target events. No trophy or prizes were awarded, just a few laughs and some very friendly competition.
