Saturday, February 11th 2012 FLORIDA STATE Championship Match
Freddie Poole Piston Champion Donovan Taylor PreCharge Champion
It was questionable if we would be holding the FL. State Match today, Saturday, February 11, 2012. A powerful cold front was colliding with a low pressure wave moving East and heavy rains threatened to wash out our plans. With luck the front came early and the rains ended Friday evening leaving us a very gray overcast morning to complete the course set-up and begin our match.
This is the first time DeSoto Airgunners hosted a State Championship Match and we could not have done it without the support of our hosting venue The DeSoto Gun Club in Arcadia Florida. Thanks for supporting the air gun activities at the range.
Scheduled as a one day 50 shot event, we attracted no out of state shooters this year however there was little doubt that each of the 13 Floridian competitors brought their “A Game” today. I was happy to see the conditions improve as most of today’s shooters drove over a hundred miles (each way) to compete; and with fuel costs what they are you hate to see someone drive to a venue only to be rained out.
Overall it was a splendid day for the competition: cool comfortable temps with steady 15 to 25 MPH winds from the north adding to the course difficulty. The Sun did its best to burn through the overcast and for a couple brief periods the clouds gave way to peek-a-boo sunshine with bursts of warming rays. What we gained in clearing sky we yielded to stronger winds. By afternoon gusts were increasing to over 30 mph and temps started falling. Our weekend overnight wind chills were forecast near or below freezing.............which may not sound so bad to most of you northern hemisphere readers but don't forget, we are located in Southern Florida folks !
Mutual respect and warm camaraderie among our shooters more than offset those chilling winds. You could often hear competitors readily offering up their verbal support with a “Good Shot” and “Well Done” to one another. A brief award ceremony followed the match and most shooters opted to enjoy some barbeque from “Slims” and to share a few laughs and bemoan the missed shots of the day before driving home.
Our competition included two lanes with forced position shots; a standing off-hand lane and a kneeling position lane each with a pair of targets. For this special event Dick Otten (below) put out a 6 foot long alligator target, a classic from the old Malabar Florida FT venue of the 1990's.
Lane 6 included a crow target nested in a tree adding to the fun and good variety of distances and “kill zone” sizes throughout the match. A couple folks shot Hunter Division. Jack Rainey, a relative new comer to Field Target took home the Hunter Division trophy (above right).
Many thanks to all the competitors who risked the weather, helped with the course housekeeping, shared their friendship and made this event so enjoyable and successful.
