Field Target With a Twist - Golf Scoring Match
On Sunday 3/18/07 we held our first Golf Scored Field Target match.
The basic premise of the match is like golf.... the low score wins. What makes this game real interesting
is a risk - reward "option shot" that can help negate some bad shots. In this 20 target match you could score as high as 80 and (theoretically) score as low as zero.
SCORING:
You're allowed a maximum of three attempts to kill a target . Miss all three and you score the dreaded
"4" for that target. ( If you get it on your third attempt you score a "3"; If get it on your second attempt you score a "2".
If you are successful on your first shot at the target you could score a "1" BUT you now have
the option to attempt a second try at that same target.
RISK/REWARD:
If you opt to take that second attempt and you are successful, then your score becomes a ZERO for that target. (instead of "1"). However, if you miss that second shot, your score is a "2" for that target.
There were enough (apparently) "easy" targets that even the most conservative of shooters were tempted to take that second shot after a good first shot. As we all know even the simple ones are never a sure thing. There was agony across the face of many shooters after missing a "gimme", specially when their score ballooned from a potential zero to a 2 when they missed their elected second shot.
Selecting which targets to double up on after a successful first shot seemed to be the key to avoid disaster.
All of the shooters had at least one target with a score of 4, and all but a first time shooter using a borrowed gun earned at least one "zero" scored target.
In today's match all shooters except Dick (and our newest guest shooter Francis) managed to hit both offhanders a least once. This inspired the quote of the match to be uttered by our stalwart Dick Otten - "Me thinks more practice might be in order. "
In all fairness the swirling winds were an added challenge. The course layout included a dog-leg so after thinking you had the wind doped out by shooting lanes 1 and 2, you needed to make a 90 degree adjustment in your windage "guesstimating" for the remaining lanes. Those cool dry breezes felt great against your sun warmed skin and the deep blue sky made it one of those "Top Ten Days" in Southwest Florida.
It was obvious that everyone was having a fun time with the golf scoring match. It is not something you would want to shoot all the time, but for a change of pace it is a total hoot and I would encourage other clubs to try it for laughs some day.
