Field Target With a Twist - Golf Scored Match
Sunday 2/12/2023 DeSoto Airgunners hosted another Golf-Scored-Field-Target Match. Combining the frustrations of golf with the fun of Field Target our GSFT event has become a (near) annual event at DeSoto Airgunners since 2007 when Dick Otten first proposed the concept.
The Game: Basically think of each field target as a golf "hole", and each shot is a golf "stroke" Like in a "real" golf tournament the low score (fewest strokes) wins. What makes the GSFT game exciting is the scoring combined with a shooters choice when presented with amplified risk - reward options. Scores may change quickly. One might negate a bad stroke (shot), or conversely, rapidly add strokes with a single miss. More details on the game play can be found HERE.
We enjoyed a turnout of 15 competitors. And with help from several participants the "golf" course was quickly set over 8 lanes including both a standing and a kneeling lane. With 3 targets (holes) per lane and 8 lanes, the 24 hole GSFT course presented a good mix of challenges including a long tree shot and a fun crack at the 3-zone bonus target (aka stroke reducer) off Lane 8.
Weather conditions became a considerable factor in today's event. Strong Winds with frequent gusts up to 40mph had us literally holding on to our hats. No timers were used today. Waiting on the Wind slowed the game a bit. No complaints. At times several minutes of bluster would pass through the range and no one dared a shot. Silence. Then; after confidently making a first shot; - a grimace as that second shot proved a costly miss.
TOP GUN recognition was earned by Dennis D. Shooting in the Open Division Dennis had the low total course score of only 10 Strokes. Dennis took every 2nd shot option and scored four perfect lanes ( zero strokes) including the kneeling lane. Dennis also bagged a Three Stroke Reduction on the bonus target. Impressive Scoring .
Noteworthy: Jerry M was the only competitor to ACE the Standing Lane today. He scored zero strokes on all three holes (6 offhand hits) on lane 7. Some fine shooting in challenging conditions.
Early Morning Sight-In. ( the calm before the gusts)
Our event ran ~7:00AM to ~ 2:00 PM. We had steady winds with lots of strong (40 mph) gusts. Gary set out his anemometer confirming 26+ mph puffs.
